Hikkaduwa: Paradise and Disaster at once

And my third trip… We stayed at a beautiful beach resort with sand right in front of your eyes. This time we were 5 people and we had a blast over there.

It was so nice…and they had this amazing fruit juices at the hotel. Papaya, Mango, Pineapple, I tried them all, just delicious. In the evening we had dinner at this nice cozy restaurant, owned by a German with Australian waiters, which was destroyed by the Tsunami and rebuilt a short while ago. They had fantastic food. Then we went to this one bar, nice Tiki-Bar right at the beach and we got introduced to local Rum called Arrack.

Very smooth, not to heavy, very dangerous ;-)) Afterwards we headed towards ‘Vibrations’, a club - open air, with a stage, everywhere beach and a huge bar….People were dancing everywhere, a very nice atmosphere. Felt like in Paradise…

On our way back I had tears in my eyes. Pictures 8-18 show what was left after the Tsunami. Massive destruction! It erased lives, houses; it degraded a whole livelihood. White flags symbolized dead bodies which gave me a shivering feeling. Most people in this area ran towards the train when they saw the wave coming because they expected more safety inside of the train, but the whole opposite occurred. The train got hit by the wave; it was flung around, the tracks were pulled out of the ground and 2000 people died in there. You could see black despair in people’s eyes. That’s an inconceivable situation!!
